The woman in her 20s and two passengers were taken to hospital along with six police officers who dived into the water in a rescue bid.

A 21-year-old woman from Bristol has been released on police bail.

The man will appear before magistrates in Bristol on Monday charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He also faces charges of drink-driving, driving without insurance and driving a motor vehicle without a licence.

The crash happened at 04:00 BST on Saturday and involved a silver BMW car containing five people going through railings on St Phillips Bridge and falling 20ft (6m) into the River Avon.

Six police officers dived into the water to help with the rescue bid and were treated in hospital as a precaution.

The two other passengers from the car were treated by medics and are now helping police as witnesses.
