Parts of England, Wales and Scotland are bracing themselves for heavy rain and strong winds following flooding on Wednesday.

Almost 80 flood warnings are in place, mainly in south-west England and the Midlands, with 143 flood alerts across England.

Amber warnings of heavy rain have been issued in parts of Scotland and Wales.

The Environment Agency said it was urging people people to remain vigilant.

"We ask that people stay safe, by staying away from swollen rivers and not attempting to drive through floodwater," said spokesman Paul Fox.

Travellers in Scotland are being warned of possible rush-hour disruption.

An amber warning for heavy rain was issued for much of Strathclyde, Dumfries & Galloway, Stirling, Perth & Kinross and the southern Highlands.

The Met Office also has an amber warning in place across much of south Wales and south-west England where rain has already begun to fall.

Two trapped

"Coming so soon after the heavy rain which fell in many places on Wednesday this is likely to provoke further issues with flooding," said the Met Office warning.

Wind speeds have risen in north-west Wales and gusts of 70mph have been recorded at Capel Curig.

In Wales, a fallen oak tree narrowly missed James Trott's house in Aberystwyth where he heard a "massive crash" at 05:30 GMT.

"It has smashed our fence down and our dogs are going crazy," he said.

Heavy rain flooded homes and roads across much of Somerset and Bristol

On the railways, train services between Devon and Somerset were badly affected with the worst flooding impact for five years.

Twelve separate areas of track were impassable, said a First Great Western spokesman.

The firm added that the line was likely to be closed for the next two days.

In Devon and Somerset on Wednesday, the fire service was called to 18 rescues of people in vehicles caught in flood water.

One of the incidents involved two people who got trapped attempting to rescue stranded cattle.

In Somerset, a crew helped a woman in labour to leave her flooded property.

Clearing debris

Fire crews in the county received more than 130 flood-related calls during a seven-hour period. Twenty people were rescued from flooded homes or vehicles.

Crews in the neighbouring Bristol and Bath areas were called 150 times in a nine-hour period and said they are preparing for more calls on Thursday.

Across the country, a number of disruptions have been reported including:

  • Avon Fire and Rescue has asked motorists to avoid driving after 15:00 GMT
  • In Gloucestershire, motorists have been advised to drive with care while teams clear debris from roads
  • In Worcestershire, buses were avoiding small villages due to flooding
  • Westonbirt and Batsford Arboretums in Gloucestershire are closed due to strong winds

Weather information

From the BBC:

Elsewhere:

Sandbags have been placed at entrances to homes in an effort to avoid a repeat of the damage caused last month by severe downpours in Devon and Cornwall.

Devon and Cornwall Police said there had been a number of reports of standing water on roads, creating a risk of cars aquaplaning.

And the RSPCA criticised a decision to allow hundreds of sheep to travel on a ship from Kent in bad weather.

Weather forecasters have predicted the heavy rain will spread across the east of England while continuing in the South West.

Michael Silverstone, BBC Weather forecaster, said: "[On Thursday], all parts of the United Kingdom will see a spell of very heavy rain, with some very strong winds on and just ahead of the rain.

"We are likely to see severe gales in exposed parts of southern and western England, Wales and Scotland, with winds gusting as high as 70mph. Even inland, some places could see gales, with winds gusting to 50 or 60mph."
