Many woke up to some snow across the Midlands and southern England

Snow has fallen in parts of southern England and north-eastern Scotland, causing accidents and delays.

Dozens of schools are closed in Essex, Hertfordshire and Aberdeenshire and at least 10 people have been injured in crashes in Essex.

Flights were delayed as Stansted and Luton Airports' runways temporarily shut while they were cleared of snow.

A school bus carrying 28 pupils skidded off an icy road in Northern Ireland but there are no reports of injuries.

Police have asked parents from the four schools the bus was serving not to visit the scene of the accident near Moneymore.

A number of main line rail services and Tube trains were delayed in England because of the adverse weather.

Ten vehicles were involved in a crash on London-bound A299 at Whitstable in Kent.

In north-east Scotland some schools were closed and journeys were delayed.

In Aberdeenshire 13 schools are closed, as were some in Shetland while the weather also disrupted pupil transport.

Driving conditions are hazardous with snow affecting the Laurencekirk to Stonehaven stretch of the main A90 between Dundee and Aberdeen but Aberdeen's airport remains open.

The BBC Weather Centre said: "The heavy snow that caused travel problems this morning has all but cleared, with a much improved picture for the rest of the day.

"Tonight there will be a widespread hard frost with ice a hazard. Snow is expected for Scotland and northern England tomorrow morning with potential for disruption."

Essex Police said there had been 45 reported crashes since 05:30 GMT.

Wintry showers

A spokesman warned of treacherous driving conditions.

Gritters have been sent out to treat roads.

The Met Office has warned of further wintry showers across Essex.

At Stansted and Luton airports terminals remained open but passengers were advised to check with their airlines before travelling and to allow extra time to get to the airports.

Stansted's runway reopened at just before 08:30 GMT, but an airport spokesman said some flights had been cancelled.

Music student Patrycja Kubiak, stranded at Stansted awaiting a flight home to Poznan in Poland, said: "It snowed for 30 minutes, and we were waiting by the gates. We were all waiting for an hour.

"They kept saying the flights were delayed, and after an hour and a half they said all flights were cancelled.

"It was really cold and really unpleasant, and the gate had no carpet. I was sitting on the floor. Some of the people were stuck for two hours on the planes."

Many roads in the Home Counties have been affected by snow.

The A505 is blocked between Hitchin and Letchworth with 12 vehicles stuck in snow and there are severe delays on the A1(M) southbound between junctions 10 for Stotfold and Baldock and junction seven for Stevenage.

Traffic is very slow on the M25 clockwise in Hertfordshire between junction 22 for St Albans and London Colney and junction 26 for Waltham Abbey and there are also problems on the A2 in Kent.

Trains delayed

Services on some main line rail services and Tube trains were disrupted.

Southwest trains through Woking in Surrey are being delayed for two hours due to snow and ice.

There is also a 90 minutes delay on the line from Reading to London Waterloo through Staines and Egham.

There are no trains between Redhill, in Surrey and Tonbridge, in Kent.

No trains were able to run between Watford Junction in Hertfordshire and Harrow and Wealdstone in north-west London, while snow caused disruption between London and Reading in Berkshire.

Rail services were unable to run between Barnes and Hounslow via Brentford in west London, while there were delays between London and Ashford International in Kent and also between Sevenoaks in Kent and Hither Green in south-east London.

In London, there were delays on the London Overground and the Metropolitan, Central and Bakerloo Tube lines.

Flights from Gatwick airport and sailings from Dover are running normally.
