Three people have been killed in a two-car crash on the A68 in the east of Scotland, police have confirmed.

Lothian and Borders Police said the incident happened south of the junction with the B6458, near Pathhead in Midlothian, just after 07:30.

One of the cars was carrying five people and ended up on its roof.

Its female driver managed to get out before emergency services arrived and fire crews cut one man free. The three other passengers died at the scene.

The male passenger who was freed has been taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

Nobody in the other vehicle was injured.

Police said the A68 had been closed near the scene of the crash.

On Sunday, a man and a woman died in a head-on crash about 10 miles from the A68 incident.

It happened on the A697, in Carfraemill in the Scottish Borders, at about 14:55.
