Flights to and from Heathrow are still subject to delays and cancellations

Hundreds of schools are closed as disruption due to widespread snow continues for a fifth day.

With fresh falls overnight and more forecast for Tuesday, schools in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have opted to stay shut.

Travel disruption caused by snow and ice is also continuing.

Airports, roads and rail networks, already disrupted by the weekend's snow, have reported problems.

On Tuesday morning up to 10cm (4in) of snow is forecast for Scotland and northern England, and about 2cm could fall in East Anglia, followed by around 6cm in southern England on Tuesday night.

Overnight temperatures fell to -11.3C in Buckinghamshire and -10C at Stansted Airport.

The Met Office has warned of icy stretches "just about anywhere" as the cold snap continues.

It has issued "be prepared" warnings for eastern, central and southern areas of Scotland.

Winds could reach up to gale force, with up to 20cm of snow predicted to fall on higher ground. Grampian Police urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, after drifting snow overnight.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow warning of snow for the south west of England and a yellow early warning for the far north east.

In Northern Ireland, 5cm-10cm of snow has fallen since Monday, with the bulk of it lying over counties Antrim and Down.

Vehicles were abandoned when roads became impassable and there have been several reports of crashes.

There could be another 2cm to 5cm of fresh snow on Tuesday morning, mainly in the east.

In Devon, stretches of one of the county's major commuter routes were shut after a series of accidents caused by ice and hail storms.

One man was injured in what police described as five collisions involving 10 vehicles on the A38 between Devonport and Marsh Mills. There was also an accident on the A38 at Kennford involving about 10 vehicles.

Airport cancellations

Heathrow Airport has already warned passengers to expect cancellations and delays following its cancellation of 200 flights on Monday.

A Heathrow spokesman said: "Because Heathrow runs at almost 100% capacity there is no slack in the system and flights unfortunately have to be cancelled. Further cancellations are inevitable given the adverse weather conditions at other airports around Europe."

Gatwick and Birmingham have also experienced delays, and Stansted said freezing fog could cause delays.

Rail operators including Gatwick Express and Southeastern also reported cancellations and revised timetables on Tuesday.

Eurostar cancelled some services and warned passengers to expect delays of up to an hour as speed restrictions were imposed as a result of snow and ice.

The East Coast rail services in England have also been disrupted, with delays of up to 40 minutes to East Coast services between London King's Cross and Berwick-upon-Tweed, Hull and Leeds.

There have been school closures:

Thousands of schools were closed on Monday. While many children enjoyed sledging, injuries were reported by ambulance services.

Sixteen-year-old Liam Stafford remained critically ill in hospital after hitting a tree while sledging in Normanby, Middlesbrough.

East of England Ambulance Service also issued a warning after it was called out to attend at least a dozen sledging-related injuries, including broken bones or head injuries requiring hospital treatment.

The cold conditions have claimed some lives. A Somerset postman died while carrying out his rounds in freezing conditions on Exmoor, Royal Mail has confirmed.

It is believed John Bircham had a heart attack after trying to free his van from a snow drift on Saturday.

And on the A12 in Essex on Monday night a driver died when his car left the road and collided with a tree.
