A man was repeatedly stabbed outside his house by two men demanding the keys to his Mercedes car, police said.
The 59-year-old victim was attacked as he walked out of his house in Worcester Avenue in Hindley, Wigan, at 09:55 GMT on Sunday.
The two men ran off along Worcester Avenue without the car keys.
Det Insp Graham Atherton said: "This was a horrendous attack on a defenceless man which has left him fighting for his life in hospital."
The victim is receiving treatment in hospital for stab wounds and his condition is described as very serious.
His attackers are described as white, with one wearing a pale pink or red top with his face covered, and the other wearing a pale blue top with stripes down the sleeves.
Police said the two men approached the victim on the doorstep and before demanding his car keys stabbed him multiple times and "left him for dead".
DI Atherton added: "I am sure local residents will be shocked and angered by what has happened, but I want to try to reassure them that we have a team of experienced detectives working on the investigation and are determined to find the men responsible."
