A 37-year-old man has been arrested after a female police officer was shot in Leeds.
The officer and a colleague were called to a disturbance in Cardigan Road, Headingley, at about 04:00 GMT.
They were confronted by a man at the property and a gun was fired, police said. The female officer's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
West Yorkshire Police said the man was arrested at 10.10 on Wood Lane in Headingley.
'Shocking impact'Assistant Chief Constable Geoff Dodd said the arrest followed information from the public. He said a firearm had also been recovered.
He added: "We appreciate this incident will also have caused concern in the community where it took place and officers will be maintaining a presence in the area to reassure local people that the situation is under control.
"The officer has sustained a very serious injury and her wellbeing is of paramount importance to us. The thoughts of colleagues remain with the officer and her family at this very difficult time.
"It is right to say that incidents where police officers face threat from firearms are thankfully very rare but that does not lessen the shocking impact when an officer is injured in such a way."
The injured officer's male colleague was not hurt in the shooting.
Kieran Williams, a resident of Cardigan Road, said he heard shots being fired in the early hours.
He said: "Maybe half four, five, we heard a couple of shots gone off, so I thought 'ah, must be fireworks or something'.
"Then police have come round to the house, knocked on the door and said basically that someone had been shot and we got to go down to the police station to give a statement and that.
"It is really worrying that someone would shoot someone on your own doorstep especially a police officer."
