A family was left with nowhere to run when their car caught fire - in the lion enclosure at Longleat Safari Park.
The car overheated in the first big cat enclosure at the Wiltshire attraction on Friday afternoon.
Rangers managed to rescue a woman and two children from the car before it burst into flames.
Kevin Ashley, from Longleat Safari Park, said: "The lions were cleared from the enclosure and the safari park was closed."
The park said the fire was put out quickly and that neither man nor beast was hurt.
Visitors to Longleat who witnessed the drama unfold took to Twitter to share their experience.
Anna Lear tweeted: "Slight drama at longleat! Car catches fire in the middle of the lion enclosure! Eeek!"
Fellow visitor George Lear said: "The car slowly caught fire and then the whole thing went up leaving the place filled with black smoke.
He added: "The lions just kept their distance and didn't take their eyes off the fire and smoke.
"The rangers were pushing them back but they were reluctant on moving away as they looked interested."
