Palestinian mourners carry the body of Mohammed Abu Khdair through the streets

Thousands of mourners have carried the body of a murdered Palestinian teenager through East Jerusalem amid tight security ahead of his funeral.

Mohammad Abu Khdair's family believe he was killed in a revenge attack for the kidnapping and killing of three young Israelis last month.

In a bid to ease tensions, Palestinian militant group Hamas is said to have agreed to a ceasefire with Israel.

The funeral is to take place near the family's home in the Shuafat district.

Israeli officials handed the body over on Friday after Muslim prayers. It was said to be badly burnt and the family had wanted to bury him on Thursday.

The body of Abu Khdair, 16, was shrouded in a Palestinian flag, borne aloft by mourners, after it was handed back to the family by Israeli officials after Friday prayers.

Israel has deployed tight security in East Jerusalem in anticipation of possible unrest at the funeral, which follows two days of clashes there between masked Palestinians and Israeli police.

Earlier on Friday it emerged that the Palestinian militant group Hamas has offered to halt its rocket attacks if Israel stops its air raids on the Gaza Strip.

A source with Hamas said Egyptian intelligence officials had brokered a potential ceasefire, after escalating clashes.

Israel says sporadic shelling from Gaza has continued. Several rockets and mortars landed without causing harm.
