Two pedestrians killed on a busy dual carriageway had asked someone to call the police shortly before their deaths, detectives revealed.

The man and woman, believed to be Lithuanian and in their 20s, were both killed on the A47 in Norfolk on Sunday.

Police are treating the woman's death as suspicious, believing she may have been pushed into the traffic.

Officers said the pair separately told a nearby farm shop worker an hour before their deaths to call the police.

The man and woman left the shop before police were called.

Norfolk Police said the pair had been walking barefoot on the dual carriageway at Terrington St John when the crash happened at about 14:15 BST.

Spoke to assistant

Officers said the man and woman were hit by a silver Kia and died at the scene. A post-mortem examination found both died of injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.

Det Ch Insp Paul Durham said at 12:30 BST they were seen at the Elm roundabout in Wisbech and were walking along both sides of the eastbound A47 towards the Little Chef services at Walsoken.

At 13:20 they then both separately spoke to an assistant at Worzals Farm Shop in Walpole Highway and asked them to call the police, but they left soon afterwards with no explanation. Police were not called.

Witnesses then saw the pair walking along the verge of the dual carriageway heading towards King's Lynn when they were hit by the car.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.
