Nigel Farage has said the Conservatives and Labour both "fear" a UKIP breakthrough at May's general election giving it the balance of power.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Mr Farage said he believed no party would secure a majority after May's poll.

UKIP will not "prop up" a government led by another party unless it offers an "immediate" EU referendum, he said.

In his first major speech of 2015 later, Mr Farage will say UKIP has "broken the class divide" in politics.

David Cameron, Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg will also stage campaign events on Thursday, the final day before Parliament breaks up for a 10-day recess.

In his Telegraph article, Mr Farage suggests that campaigning this year has been "incredibly dull so far", with Labour's focus on the NHS and the Conservatives' prioritisation of the economy "pretty predictable".

Mr Farage, who is hoping to be elected to Westminster as MP for South Thanet, goes on to suggest that the two largest parties were failing to "cut through" to the public.

"These parties have forgotten there is a country out there," he writes. "There's a country beyond Westminster crying out for attention, respect and assistance at a time when politicians are trying to convince them that everything is fine."

'Whole of Britain'

The UKIP leader says his party's main policies, including leaving the EU, taking all those on the minimum wage out of tax, ditching HS2 and scrapping tuition fees for science, maths, medicine and engineering degrees, have a wide appeal across the country.

"When we say we believe in Britain, we believe in the whole of Britain. We are the only party with representation in all four corners of the UK.

"UKIP is doing as well in the North as we are in the South. We are a party that represents the whole country... and we have broken the class divide in British politics."

He added: "No-one will have a majority after this election. They all know it. But the thing they fear most is a sizeable number of UKIP MPs... holding them to account for you."

Addressing UKIP's policy on the NHS, Mr Farage says it would inject £3bn into the health service but would change the way the institution operated, prioritising research and innovation over middle management "to make it work for those who need it".

His remarks come amid continuing debate in the party over how to meet the rising demand for healthcare at a time of continuing strain on the public finances.

The BBC's political correspondent Robin Brant said senior figures in the party, which has two MPs, think radical reform of the NHS is needed and internal disagreements about the idea are likely to resurface after the general election.
