Three people have been killed in a crash involving a coach and a car on the M1 in Bedfordshire.

The collision happened near Flitwick between junctions 12 and 13, at 06:45 GMT. The M1 is currently closed northbound between those junctions.

Three men who had been in the car have been pronounced dead. A fourth man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

No-one in the coach was injured, police say.

Bedfordshire Police said the double-decker coach was heading north from Kent and collided with a hatchback car, which was stationary on the hard shoulder.

A force spokesman said: "Police are locating and liaising with next of kin, a full collision investigation continues and diversions are expected to remain in place for the next few hours."

Drivers have been urged to plan alternative routes.

The official diversion is via the A5120 to Flitwick, Steppingly Road and Fordfield Road to Millbrook, and then the westbound A507.
