Thick fog has led to the cancellation of more than 100 flights at London's Heathrow and City airports.

Nothing is moving in or out of London City and every flight until noon was cancelled or delayed - inbound flights were diverted to Stansted.

There are also delays and passengers have been advised to check with their airlines.

Heathrow Airport said 80 flights had been cancelled, while there was also disruption at Southampton airport.

'Not moving'

The cancellations - which included flights to Berlin, Paris, Belfast and Dublin - were mostly to short haul journeys, Heathrow Airport said.

Three inbound flights were diverted to Stansted, which is unaffected by the fog. Luton and Gatwick have reported no cancellations and only minor delays.

"It's taking longer to rise than we expected but it is lifting," a Heathrow spokeswoman said.

Planes were grounded at London City Airport where 20 departing flights were cancelled and almost 40 arrivals were either cancelled, delayed or diverted.

A spokeswoman for the airport said: "It's ever so thick here. There's just nothing moving."

Six flights were cancelled and 18 delayed at Southampton Airport while no planes have been able to land.

On Tuesday night four aircraft had to be diverted to Bournemouth.

"We're still not moving. The forecast is improving though and the fog is starting to lift away," Jan Halliday, from Southampton Airport said.

A spokeswoman for Heathrow said on average the airport handles around 1,300 flights a day and that affected passengers would be re-booked onto later flights.

The airport has had to cancel flights because of an air traffic control requirement for more space on the schedule between planes during periods of decreased visibility, she added.

Stephen Main, who was due to fly to New York from Glasgow via London Heathrow, said he would now be delayed by almost nine hours.

"We had plans for a business meeting in the afternoon but this puts the whole trip back."

A spokeswoman for Southampton Airport said the conditions had improved and one plane had landed but that disruption ongoing.

Delays were reported early in the morning on the crossing between Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Wightlink Ferries said.

And operations at Southampton Container Port were suspended due to the fog.
